The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) branch, has awarded scholarships to indigent and physically challenged students as part of its annual community support initiative.

The scholarship presentation ceremony took place on Thursday, 16th October 2025, at the ASUU office within the university campus, under the leadership of Dr. Murtala Abdullahi Kwara, Chairman of ASUU-UMYU.

According to Dr. Kwara, the scholarship scheme is part of the union’s commitment to promoting education and supporting students facing economic hardship. He revealed that the national body of ASUU had increased the scholarship amount from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 per beneficiary, with each branch directed to nominate two qualified students.

“In addition to the two national slots, our UMYU branch decided to include three more students to benefit from the scheme, considering the current economic challenges in the country,” Dr. Kwara said.

He further disclosed that a delegation of ASUU national executives (NEC) visited the university to engage with the Katsina State Government on issues affecting the union and the education sector.

The chairman of the scholarship selection committee noted that the beneficiaries were chosen through a transparent and merit-based process, considering both their academic performance and financial background. Eligible students were required to be indigent Nigerians with a minimum CGPA of 3.50.

National ASUU scholarship recipients include Sakina Abdullahi, a 300-level student of Arabic, and Fatima Musa Mahuta, a 300-level Computer Science student with a CGPA of 4.16.

Beneficiaries of the ASUU-UMYU scholarship are:

  • Fatima Mustafa, a physically challenged student of Special Education (CGPA 3.50)
  • Muhammad Ahmad, a physically challenged student of Special Education (CGPA 3.67)
  • Binta Mahamad, a Mathematics student (CGPA 3.82)

Dr. Kwara commended the beneficiaries for their dedication and urged them to remain focused on their studies, stressing that education remains the foundation of national development.

He reaffirmed ASUU’s commitment to continually supporting underprivileged and disabled students as part of its contribution to society and the advancement of public universities in Nigeria.
